SMACool

Air-conditioning for residential buildings based on elastocalorics

The main objective of the SMACool project is to develop a functional air conditioning device for residential buildings, based on the emerging technology of elastocalorics, which uses shape memory alloys as solid-state refrigerants for efficient and sustainable cold generation.

Elastocalorics is an innovative, disruptive cooling and heating technology with the potential of reaching outstanding energy efficiency and zero global warming potential.

SMACool is funded as part of the EIC Pathfinder Challenge ‘Clean and efficient cooling’.

The EIC Pathfinder Challenge is a funding program that aims to support disruptive innovation in various fields. It provides funding and resources for projects that develop novel solutions to address societal challenges or achieve technological breakthroughs. The challenge is aimed at interdisciplinary teams that pursue creative approaches and are prepared to take risks.

The EIC Pathfinder Challenge ‚Clean and efficient cooling‘ aims at advancing scientific knowledge and technological development of novel, clean and efficient cooling solutions that fully underpin “cold economy” vision.
